Chapter 8: Introducing Nami (September 10)

Summary

Luffy and Zoro are hungry and need a navigator. Luffy sees a bird and tries to get it, but is taken away. Zoro sails after him and meets a bunch of pirates, belonging to the Buggy pirate crew. They tell that a girl stole their treasure. In a nearby town that girl has just stolen the map of the Grand Line and is being chased by pirates. Luffy lands nearby and the girl tells him to take care of the pirates. One pirate slaps Luffy's hat away, Luffy gets angry and stomps all three of them. The girl introduces herself as Nami, a thief, specialty pirates and wants to work with Luffy.

Opinion

More of a transitional chapter, but still a good one. We're of course introduced to Nami, which is always great too.

Character of the chapter

Nami. She stole a treasure and boat, was able to take care of three armed pirates and then used Luffy to take care of another three.

Buggy is a dick. A flashy dick. Nami is properly introduced now and there's some nice foreshadowing of the Arlong arc. The chemistry between Nami and Luffy is excellent.

Chapter 9: The Devil Girl (September 11)

Summary

Nami tries to start a conversation with Luffy, but he isn’t interested. Buggy blows someone up, because he thought he was insulted. Luffy and Nami talk some more. Nami becomes mad when Luffy says he’s a pirate too. Nami tricks Luffy into going with him and she sells him out to Buggy. She succeeds in getting Buggy’s trust. Zoro arrives on the island.

Opinion

While not much happened in this chapter, it stil had some great comedic scenes between Nami and Luffy. Buggy was cool too.

Chapter 10: Incident at the Bar (September 12)

Summary

Buggy and his men party. Nami joins in. Nami gives Luffy some food. Buggy blows up a street, then demands Nami to blow up Luffy. Nami hesitates and Luffy inspires. Nami attacks a Buggy pirate. Buggy gets mad and has his men attacks Nami. Nami saves Luffy by putting the fire out with her bare hands. Nami’s life is in turn saved by Zoro who fends off the pirates just in time. Buggy challenges Zoro, but is cut up immediately after.

Opinion

Everyone in this chapter was cool. Seriously.

Chapter 11: Take Flight (September 13)

Summary

Zoro is happy, but is then cut by Buggy’s sword. Buggy has the Chop Chop fruit. Luffy insults Buggy. Buggy throws his sword, but Luffy destroys it with his teeth. Luffy gives Zoro a command, who then turns the Buggy Ball on its owners. Zoro escapes, carrying Luffy’s cage with him and Buggy becomes furious.

Opinion

Alright chapter. Nothing much happened, except for Zoro owning and getting owned.

Zoro. He starts off being tricked, but more than makes up for it later on.

Chapter 12: Dog (September 14)

Summary

Buggy is mad. He calls in Mohji, the beast tamer. Zoro and Luffy are exhausted. Luffy gets in a fight with a dog. Nami gives Luffy the keys to his cage, but the dog eats them. The mayor of the town shows up. His name is Boodle and he explains the history of Shushu, the dog. Shushu guards the pet shop of his dead master. Mohji shows up. Luffy makes him mad and Richie, the lion destroys the cage and slams Luffy through a house. Shushu gets ready to fight the incoming Richie. Luffy wants to kick ass.

Opinion

One of my two favourite animal characters are introduced here: Shushu and Richie. Both are awesome and great pets.

Chapter 13: Treasure (September 15)

Summary

Shushu is beaten up by Richi as he tries to defend his treasured shop. He has some flashbacks bout his master and is ultimately defeated as the pet shop is burned down. Luffy witnesses this and promptly beats up Richie. Mohji apologises, but Luffy gets REALLY angry now. He OHKO’s Mohji and Nami gets furious. Luffy ignores her and gives Shushu a beaten up bag of pet food, the last of the treasure. Buggy wants to bomb down the village.

Opinion

An amazing chapter. Shushu desperately trying to save his treasure, but failing was heartbreaking. Luffy getting pissed off was great. Luffy and Shushu’s talk at the end was touching. All of it was fantastic.

Character of the chapter

Shushu. For defending his treasure till the end.

Chapter 14: Reckless!! (September 16)

Summary

Mohji tries to tell about Luffy, but fails. Shushu arrives at the place where the other villagers are. Nami apologises to Luffy. Boodle wants to attack Buggy. Boodle tells about how his treasure is the town he built. Buggy then promptly destroys it. Zoro is woken up and Boodle recklessly charges on towards Buggy. Luffy and Nami form a temporary partnership. The three get ready for battle too.

Opinion

Not really an interesting chapter. The mayor gives a hotblooded speech, but he’s not interesting enough to make you care. For the rest it was more of a transitional chapter again.

Character of the chapter

Boodle. He recklessly charges at Buggy, even though he knows it won’t work.
