http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/sony-says-the-era-of-the-closed-playstation-platform-is-over/

"Hence why Sony is transforming its previously closed and segmented game business into something more modern. Dust 514, the first-person shooter based on MMO EVE Online, follows Valve’s Portal 2 in letting console and PC gamers play together."

So console and PC's are already starting to play together online. I'm not sure about this whole connectivity era. Sure it starts with online, but then it will kill exclusives won't it. We'll be seeing stuff like God Of War on XBOX and PC so everybody could connect online together. Pretty much I can imagine this boiling down to multiple consoles being obsolete. We'll end up with 1 conjoint console from Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony. Only worry then is if everybody comes together, they'll be able to charge whatever they damn well please for games. There will be no incentive to lower cost to encourage more buys and beat out the competitor.

Dunno, maybe I'm putting to much into this. For all we know this may end up flopping. Still with online being a major part of things now, who knows.

What do you guys think?

I would love this for fighting games and FPSs. Exclusives obviously won't cross over though.

What Strider said. IMO, this is actually overdue. Being able to play an MMO against other console users would be refreshing.

Claiming that Dust 514 is a cross platform game is only half true.
While EVE Online players on PC will be able to interact with Dust 514 players on PS3 they will be playing entirely different games, the 'cross platform' comes from events in one having an impact on the world in the other.

It's not the same as Portal 2 by any stretch, which only succeeded because it was a cooperative game and not competitive. The last time that was tried was, I believe, Shadowrun which crashed and burned because it was a FPS and people on consoles couldn't keep up with PC players who, through M&K controls, had an inherent advantage and higher skill ceiling.

Sony is also unlikely to truly open their systems as that would reduce the level of control they have over their hardware, something they have, for better or worse, vehemently defended over the years.

Also this only happens because Sony and Microsoft don't view PC as competition to their systems. That is to say there are some people who don't want or know how to play games on their computer and will buy a console for that express purpose while, on the other hand, there are people who don't like consoles for one reason or another and will only play on PC. As long as the former group is, for example, buying a PS3 and not an Xbox Sony doesn't give two shits.

What Neo said. I think we're also more likely to see PC + Xbox crossover in due time.

The only reason we'd see a computer-PS3 crossover is if Sony developed their own OS for desktops.
